iStock Won’t Let You Play in Runyon Canyon March 11, 2016

Try to search for “Runyon Canyon images or video on iStock. Just try. You’ll quickly find out that it is impossible.

I recently took a trip to Los Angeles and shot some stock footage in Runyon Canyon Park, a popular walking and hiking trail just a stone’s throw away from Hollywood Boulevard.

Against my better judgement, I decided to upload a few of these new shots I grabbed while on the trail to iStock. After they were approved, I went to do a test search to see if I could find them. I was surprised that iStock must have some sort of auto-correct feature enabled when searching, and the site promptly changes “Runyon Canyon” to “Reunion Canyon” (see my attempt in the video example).

runyon-canyon-unknownI tried several browsers and operating systems, and all my searches for “Runyon Canyon” got changed to “Reunion Canyon.” So, I guess if I can’t search for these shots, customers looking for this subject matter won’t either.

Odd. I suspect their bizarre system of “disambiguating” keywords doesn’t think that “Runyon Canyon” is a valid phrase. But it is, and iStock should fix this.

Just another reason why iStock is rapidly becoming “unfriended” by stock media producers.
